Our Certification Program

The Sivananda Institute of Health and Yoga offers a 900-hour certification as a Sivananda Yoga Health Educator in the holistic and therapeutic application of classical Yoga techniques and practices. The Sivananda Yoga Health Educator is qualified to work through a conscious and proactive model, empowering participants with the tools and Self-knowledge to restore their own health, to reduce stress and to restore balance and purpose to their life.  Currently being accredited through the International Association of Yoga Therapists

What We Cover

The Sivananda Yoga Health Educator works alongside the current medical paradigm to augment care with deep healing Yoga practices through positive lifestyle choices, vegetarian diet, asana, pranayama, conscious relaxation techniques and meditation practices. These classical techniques can be used to address specific health conditions and their symptoms to provide a greater sense of well-being. Those in need can discover a lasting sense of peace. Over the course of the program, the Yoga Health Educator becomes versed in the Five Points of Yoga and the Four Paths of Yoga—Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Raja Yoga (includes Hatha Yoga), and Jnana Yoga.

Practical tools, foundational concepts and philosophical knowledge are gained to create the framework for more advanced study as one progresses through the program. Emphasis is placed on understanding the subtler aspects of the causes of disease and stress in the individual. Intensive study in Yoga psychology, the therapeutic effects of meditation practice on specific health conditions, the theory of karma and disease, counseling techniques based in the Vedic sciences and Yoga, Ayurveda psychology, as well as understanding the root cause of addiction and behaviors are covered. Thus, the Yoga Health Educator has the knowledge and intuitive capacity to be a positive and healthy instrument of healing.

Course Format

The Sivananda Yoga Health Educator program is structured over two years and meets in monthly 3-day weekend classroom sessions at the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center in San Francisco. Each weekend module includes self-study materials with assignments preceding each weekend session. Assignments will be due at the beginning of the next assigned module. Each weekend module will include a short exam to gauge students’ understanding of the program material, concepts, and their application. Students will participate in two 10-day Ashram Immersions taking place at the beginning of the Yoga Health Educator program’s first year, and concluding the program’s second year. The 10-day Ashram Immersions are located at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Farm.

Practicum

As part of the Practicum Program, and under the supervision of an assigned Mentor, the Yoga Health Educator meets with participants in one-on-one Yoga Health Consultation sessions (observed and unobserved). The Yoga Health Educator will conduct intake and assessment of the participant, develop protocols addressing the participant’s needs, and provide documentation for each case. Follow-up, re-assessment, and adjustment of protocols to meet the participant’s evolving needs and goals are an essential component of the Practicum and the work of the Yoga Health Educator.
