THE FIVE POINTS OF YOGA

Āsana

Yogic exercises are in fact called Yoga Āsanas, an āsana being a steady pose. Yogic exercises, when done correctly, influence and positively energize all systems of the body.

                

 

Basic Philosophy

The postures are practiced with awareness and concentration, accompanied by conscious breathing and relaxation. In this way Yogic exercises affect not only the physical body but also the astral body, the energetic body and the mind.
Body and mind are put in alignment or harmony with their ruler, the inner spirit, thus giving the practitioner a deeper sense of well being and meaning. Yoga asanas prepare the body and mind to be strong for the further practice of concentration and meditation.

Health Benefits

Through the systematic and rhythmic holding of postures with proper breathing and concentration, the prana, or vital energy, is allowed to flow unobstructed to all parts of the body, with revitalizing effects. Tensions are released as body and mind are harmonized.
Yogic exercised, when done correctly, influence and energize all systems of the body; the circulatory system, the muscular and skeletal systems, the endocrine system, the respiratory system, the digestive system and, most importantly, the nervous system. Muscles are not any strengthened but also stretched.
There is great emphasis maintining the flexibility of the spine. Swami Vishnudevananda said “flexible spine, flexible mind”.

Daily Practice

In order to experience the full benefits of the practice Swami Vishnudevananda recommended that the basic sequence of asanas be practiced daily as part of the integral system of 5 points of Yoga.
